The failure of the 'golden generation'
Between 2002 and 2006, many argued that England had some truly world class players. However, they never quite performed at their best when representing their country. Their best performance came at Euro 2004 when a young Wayne Rooney was on fire. Even then, they couldn't get beyond the Quarter Final.
The low point of not qualifying for Euro 2008
Despite having a number of players that were still in their prime, England failed to qualify for Euro 2008. Discussions regarding the need for a complete overhaul and revolution were becoming increasingly common.
More failure
England's qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup was promising enough. They put in some decent performances but struggled once they reached South Africa. They were arguably unlucky to be thrashed 4-1 by Germany in the last 16 but even then, they never looked like challenging and getting to the later stages.
Roy Hodgson took over as manager after 2010 and took England to the next three tournaments. Their best performance came in 2012 but yet again, they couldn't get beyond the last eight. Their opponents on that night were the same as the Euro 2020 final
The 2014 World Cup in Brazil and Euro 2016 in France saw yet more low points. In 2014, they didn't even get pas the group stages and in Euro 2016, they suffered an appalling loss against Iceland in the last 16. It was that defeat that made the FA made a huge change.
Southgate you're the one
This interesting video takes a wider look at the impact of Gareth Southgate on England. The turning point for many players and fans alike was a victory over Columbia in the Russian World Cup in 2018. Whilst they were ultimately knocked out by Croatia in 2018, it did give England fans hope for the future.
