Midtjylland were level after da Silva Ferreira scored on the 66th minute. Midtjylland winger was also sent off in the second half, meaning that both teams finished with ten men.

The return leg will take place next Wednesday in Denmark. The winners face a potentially tough next round against either PSV Eindhoven or Galatasaray in the third qualifying round.

More reaction from Celtic fans

One Celtic fan on YouTube said: "I think this was an excellent performance by the Bhoys tonight, considering before the game.

"I was doubtful that we would get any type of result at all, since we are in so much need of more Defenders (at least 3) in my opinion the team surprised me this evening, I was very impressed with Abada, he looks a great young talent, I just hope the board now backs big Ange and gives him the money for the players he wants to bring in!"

Another was equally positive: "Considering very limited pre-season this was a very good shift by the players. Well done Ange and coaching staff, with other players soon to come in will be an exciting Celtic to watch."

The new Celtic manager also spoke with the BBC and other media outlets. He said: " "I was frustrated at the result, not the performance, but Nir had already been booked and when you've been booked you have to be careful in your actions.

"It's disappointing for him more than anything, because he was really keen to put in a strong performance. "He had started the game really well for us, so it's disappointing for him that he misses the second game as well."

New Celtic captain

Following the departure of former captain Scott Brown, Callum McGregor was announced as the new Celtic skipper. He spoke about his delight in leading his team out.
