Will Norwich City perform better in the Premier League next season?

Or does another relegation season beckon for The Canaries?

Carrow Road, Norwich

Norwich City were crowned winners of the Championship last season, but attention has quickly turned to how they will get on in the Premier League. There’s definitely a lot for Norwich to consider as they prepare for life back in the Premier League.

Reversing the trend for newly promoted clubs

Norwich were promoted during the 2018/2019 season but struggled in their Premier League campaign and went straight back down. This is a story that has been replicated this season. Following promotion from last season’s Championship, Fulham and West Brom’s stay in the Premier League was cut short after a relegation.

The Canaries might look to Leeds United for inspiration on how to survive and thrive in the Premier League. Leeds have impressed everyone with their style of play and have utilised the transfer market well.

Burnley are also worth looking at. Since they were promoted back to the Premier League in 2016, they have managed to survive in the league on a minimal transfer budget. The key for them as been a strong defence and their ability to pick up wins against those around them in the bottom-half of the league.

Transfer targets

Norwich will almost certainly need to strengthen in the summer transfer window. If they struggle to sign new players, they will likely be considered one of the favourites to get relegated.

Manchester United’s Axel Tuanzebe might be a realistic target for the club as he has struggled to break into his United side this season. His Premier League experience could prove to be beneficial for the club.

Matthew Hoppe has also been linked with a move to Carrow Road. The American forward has been one of few bright spots for a Schalke side that has been relegated from the Bundesliga. He is reportedly available for around £7 million. This would be more affordable for the club, but they face competition for his signature from the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool.

Key players for Norwich going into the new season

Teemu Pukki once again played a huge part in Norwich gaining promotion. He will be looking to improve on the eleven goals he scored in his last season in the Premier League. One of the highlights of that season for Pukki was scoring the important third goal in a 3-2 win over Manchester City during the earlier stages of that season.

Fixture announcement

As Greater Manchester Football have posted, the fixtures for the new Premier League have been announced. They start the season with matches against Liverpool and Manchester City.

Looking back at the 1992/1993 season

Norwich have historically had some success in the top-flight. During the inaugural Premier League, they were top of the league for various points of the season and finished in third places.

This meant them qualifying for the following season’s UEFA Cup. They went onto beat Bayern Munich during their European run. That win over Bayern was arguably the peak of that side and it quickly began a decline following the departure of the manager Mike Walker in 1994.

Expectations of Norwich fans are far lower in 2021. A series of relegations throughout the history of the Premier League has meant Norwich fans would probably be happy with 17th place.
